Silly Craft Stuff!

This week, I posted a ton of cool recipes for play doughs including edible ones!
So, I thought it would be fun to list some more recipes for stuff like silly putty, goop, etc.

Homemade Silly Putty
2 cups white school glue
1 cup liquid starch
Mix together and set aside until dry. Store in an airtight container.

Gooey Goop
1/2 cup water
2 cups cornstarch
Food coloring
In a large bowl, mix together water and cornstarch until smooth. Add food coloring and stir.
Play with goop on a plastic covered surface or on newspaper.

Silly Play Goop
2 cups cornflour
2 cups warm water
3 cups flour
In a mixing bowl, add two cups cornflour and 1 cup water. Mix until it becomesliquid. Pour liquid in a saucepan on low heat and add the three cups flour. Mix while gradually adding water.

Turn off stove and put the dough on the table for kids to play with. It will stick to your hands but that's okay. Pour a little flour on the table or on children's hands. Keep playing with it until it doesn't stick. You can also store in ziploc bags.

Silly Slime
1 cup room temperature water
1 cup white school glue
Food coloring
1 1/3 cups warm water
4 tablespoons Borax laundry booster

Mix together room temperature water, glue, and food coloring in a medium bowl. Set aside. In another bowl, mix together warm water and Borax until completely dissolved.
Next, slowly pour the glue mix into the second bowl with the Borax solution, but do not mix them together.
Roll the glue mix around in the Borax solution (around 4 or 5 times). Then lift the glue mix out of the Borax solution. Knead for 2-3 minutes. Store the slime (the glue mix) in an airtight container or plastic ziplock bag.

Play Dough eaters?

...That about says it all Anyone have a play dough lover in the house?

My six year old daughter Loves play dough. It is harder to use this as an activity though, with the baby brother around now.

Tonight, she lugged her big bag of play dough accessories and accoutrements, which she hasn't been able to play with much lately for reasons aforementioned.

Where did all the play dough go???

There was only one container of play dough that was still pliable. Light yellow. The hot pink was dehydrated but we managed to make three "cookies" out of it. It was not going to do much else.

The other containers were all empty... baby brother has a blue mouth!

So... Mommy decided to make up a batch of homemade play dough at 8:30 pm.

My daughter was thrilled and begged to "help". So once the dough was made, she helped work some extra flour in to it so it wasn't too sticky.

I decided, since baby brother isn't going to be leaving home any time soon- and he for sure isn't going to grow out of his aquired tastes either, I better look up some new play dough recipes for something more edible.

I always wondered,
WHY are there such things as edible play dough??
Now, I finally get it.

Here is the recipe I used for the non-edible play dough. And a few neato recipes for some Edible dough and extremely unique, Non-edible play doughs for the truly adventurous mommy to try.

Play dough recipe:
1 cup flour (you may end up having to knead more in afterwards if it is sticky)
1 cup warm water (cold water works too)
2 teaspoons cream of tartar (this seems to be the sole reason for it's existence on the cooking aisle!)
1 teaspoon oil (I just used the inch of oil drained off the top of the peanut butter jar-hehe waste nothing!)
1/4 cup salt(don't bother waiting for it all to dissolve in the water, cuz it won't)
food coloring
1 tsp vanilla (I don't know why this is in there- I don't think it makes it taste any better...)

First of all, Make SURE it is 8:30 pm, umm that would be Mountain time! Mix Water, oil, salt and food coloring(or use kool aid mix). Stir over medium heat and add the dry ingredients. Remove from pan and knead until blended smooth. PLEASE wait a couple minutes for it too cool off first, though. Place in plastic bag or airtight container when cooled. According to Parents Magazine, this will last a long time- unless you got a baby brother in the house.

Cornstarch Clay
1 cup cornstarch
2 cups salt
1 1/3 cups cold water
Put salt and 2/3 cup water in pan and bring to a boil. Mix cornstarch with 2/3 cup water and mix well. Blend 2 mixtures together and knead into clay. The dough has to be heated as it is combined to set. Makes about 3 cups. This clay can be air dried and then painted. Store unused clay in airtight container in the fridge.

Rubbery Playdough -(Once again, I ask...WHY is there such a thing??)
2 cups baking soda

1 1/2 cups water

1 cup cornstarch
Mix with a fork until smooth. Boil over medium heat until thick. Spoon onto plate or wax paper.

-->Visit this Link for EDIBLE Playdough Recipes such as Chocolate, Peanut Butter and...Oatmeal??

Soap Dough (Will make their hands clean if nothin else!!
Use in the bath for super CLEAN FUN)
2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 Tbs. liquid tempera
1 Tbs. liquid soap
1/2 cup water
Mix all the dry ingredients together. In a separate bowl, mix the soap, tempera, and water. Add the water to the dry mixture. Knead until pliable.

Cotton Ball Dough (Nah, I am not even going to Bother to ask Why?? this time)
1 cup flour
3/4 to 1 cup water
1 bag of cotton balls any color (Hmm.. the only color I have seen is white, I guess I live a sheltered life...)
Mix flour and water together until you get a smooth paste. Dip the cotton balls into the paste. Form into desired shapes. Place on cookie sheet and cook at 325 for 1 hour until lightly brown and hard. Let cool. Paint creations with tempera paint.

Snow Dough (This one I DARE you to eat, baby brother!)
1 cup Ivory Snow laundry detergent
2 cups warm water
food coloring
electric hand mixer or egg beater
Add food coloring to water then add to laundry detergent. Mix with beater until fluffy. Use just like playdough.
Enjoy!

More funny stuff

My daughter has added another 3rd saying this week that she likes to repeat over and over.

First she learned "those were the good old days" (with a sighhhhhh),

"I'm sugar-free!....(repeat over and over)" and now her new mantra is,

"Girls Rule and Boys STINK"

Got any to top that? Share 'em here! I need a good laugh...

What are Little Girls Made of??

When I was a child, I always heard that
Little girls are made of Sugar
and Spice and everything nice...

Apparently my six year old disagrees with that.

Tonight, she kept sailing throughout the house singing,
"I'm Sugar-Free!!"

She sounded like she was FULL of sugar, if you ask me! I don't know WHERE she got that or why she kept saying it LOL.

She went on to explain: " It's so true, I AM sugar-free..."

Well, I still say girls are made of sugar- especially late at night. Can you say sugar HIGH?

Inspired by my daughter's new motto, I found a sugar free deal for you:

Get your FREE SAMPLE of Splenda here

Free sample of Rich, Belgian Chocolate sugar free Crownies!

If you are leaning more towards my opinion, than my daughter's, then here is a coupon more fitting for you that is FULL of sugar:

A DOZEN free Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

ENJOY!

Other funny stuff my 6 year old has come up with this week:
--starting to say "those were the good old days" with a sighhhh

Not all Fairy Tales end happily...

I don't know if you remember a week or so ago when I mentioned that we have hermit crabs...

Well, we have five of them at the moment. The baby likes to try and get ahold of them until he sees what is inside the shell then he backs away with a look of pure fear on his face- it is very funny! The six year old is in LOVE with the critters and big sister enjoys them as well.

So, who takes care of these pets? M O M

Yep, I change their food, keep their freshwater and saltwater fresh and mist the little guys daily. The kids just get to enjoy "playing" with them.
Yesterday, as I was cleaning the cage up and refilling the water/food dishes, my six year old decided she needed to set one of the crabs up with a blanket, chair, bed, food and a toy.

--The "blanket" was a red piece of flannel that she said was "a majesty" ~ AKA a red carpet for her royal crab,
--the bed was a treasure chest with another piece of flannel fabric folded up inside,
--a piece of rice cake was set out for food and the toy, was a disc from a disc launcher that she got for free inside a cereal box a few days ago.

Fortunately, the crab has a pirate shell, so he went well with the treasure chest that she set up!

For all her efforts, the little pirate crab did not seem to like the chair, was not hungry, and promptly climbed out of his bed to roam. I guess the place was too threadbare for his tastes.

Not to be discouraged, my daughter set up an entire Fairy tale castle and set his little chair in there and even provided him with his own vehicle to get around in!

It was the perfect beginning to a crabby Fairy tale. The little fellow really seemed to love this much better than his previous digs. He even tried to climb up the drawbridge, peered over the balcony and loved sitting in the car.

The girls were having so much fun playing with their little pirate and even got him a friend-

Now this WAS a Fairy Tale come true for the crab!
They can live happily ever after, right? uh huh...

I really needed to get busy sewing upstairs. So, I left my 15 year old in charge and gave implicit instructions that if they were not going to be watching the two crabs, they better place them back in the cage.

You would think with my oldest child being 15, this tale would have a happier ending~
About 30 minutes later, my oldest daughter comes in my sewing room and says,

"Mom, we don't know where the crabs are"

Surprise, surprise. Why is it that whenever Mom needs to get some work done, something always happens?

Mom: How did that happen?

15 yr old daughter: I don't know!

Previously, I would have said that kids 10 and up are perfectly capable of caring for these pets.
I have changed my mind.

So, for two hours, instead of getting my sewing orders done, I was on my hands and knees searching for the little pirate and his friend. We tore through the family room, the kitchen and the Pantry and even searched the dining room just in case.
If you don't know this already, these little guys can really move fast. So, it was anyone's guess as to how far they actually went

Finally, after family plans for the evening had already been cancelled, both the crabs were found and returned to their home. I have never been so thrilled in my life~ Now I don't have to worry every day and lay in bed all night wondering where they are and how bad it is going to smell once we find the crabs all dried up somewhere.

That night, the girls drew me cute little pictures- an offering to appease Mommy's wrath, I think!

Fun Friday came late today...

Well, we survived the trip on the airplane with the 3 kids! Here are a couple of snapshots of my 6 year old mid-flight. She was the one that was extremely nervous about flying but she did great. I said, see that wasn't so bad, was it? She said, I was still scared!

Does she look like she was scared to you? hmmm....

Well I will post more about our trip in a later post.
I apologize for not posting the Fun Friday(freebies and fun activities for kids) today sooner.

I am swamped with orders that I need to get done by the end of the month, which is just around the corner. So, I have been busy sewing and all that fun stuff ever since we got home from the trip.

So, On with Fun Friday, better late than never:
We took the kids out to eat on my husband's birthday this week. Since he worked in the afternoon and evening that day, we had to go out before lunchtime hour. All the restaurants were closed that my hubby wanted to go for his birthday meal. So, we ended up taking the kids to Shari's. Wow, if you have one where you live, you should check it out. The milkshakes for kids are extremely inexpensive and they come in a full size glass, no "kids size". They had fruit bowls for my daughter, who never eats a meal at a restaurant and she was thrilled to have fruit, LOL. My hubby had the oreo explosion milkshake which was oreo with raspberry sauce swirled in it. The best thing is, if you happen to go after 4 pm, kids eat FREE everyday!

Fun Activity idea
A couple weeks ago we posted a fun craft with sand for sand dough. Today, you can learn how to make a permanent sand castle, or sculpture! Kaboose.com has this neat idea:

What you'll need:
3 cups of sand ("play sand" from the hardware store works if you don't have "beach sand")
1 1/2 cups of cornstarch
1 1/2 cups of water
Newspaper
Old cooking pot
Large spoon

How to make it:
Mix the ingredients together in the pot.
With the help of a grownup, cook the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly.
When it gets thick, take it off of the stove and let cool.
Once it is cool, use the spoon to turn it out on the newspaper.
Now you can make it into any shape you like, let it dry, and keep your creation forever!

Tips:
A quick spray of Pam or other lubricating spray helps the sand pop right out of the sandcastle molds. A hole poked into the top of the sandcastle mold also seemed to help.
To make the sandcastles pop out perfectly, the trick seemed to be packing the sand mixture into the molds tightly and leaving an air space at the open end of the mold and slamming the mold down hard onto the plate....the extra air helps pop the sand right out.

Well, we are off to Red Lobster for Dinner(we got a gift card). We also get a FREE appetizer or Dessert and you can too, if you go to their website and join the club. You will get a coupon to print out. Also you get coupons for your birthday! Yum yum...

Love to COOK? Bake?
I did a lot of cooking last week. I even tried making homemade egg roll wrappers. I usually buy them at the store ready made and never even thought of making them myself, but I found this recipe online and tried it out! It worked great, but would love to have a pasta machine or something to help roll the dough out really thin!
I also made sushi and other goodies to go with them. My girls kept asking for more rice balls with crab/cream cheese filling inside them. The kitchen looked like a rice factory exploded! Tip: Got sticky rice all over? Simply wait for it to dry and then it is MUCH easier to clean up!!

Boutique cafe Tries Burpie Baby on for size

I am Super Excited this morning!

I woke up to find some wonderful news in my inbox. The Boutique cafe has featured my convertible Binkie Bib & my newest baby- the Burpie 911.

Visit boutiquecafe.com or Click here to Read what they have to say about these new products and how they are changing lives -one mess at a time...

Here is just a teeny bit of what they had to say:

"With the size diaper bag I carry I have to keep it organized if I’m going to find anything. With a pacifier pocket cliipped to the outside and a spare burp cloth next to the changing pad I felt I was good to go. But after reviewing Burpie Baby’s Binkie Bib and Burpie Baby 911 burp cloth I realize my diaper bag has more potential than I thought...."

~Of course, there is also a Discount Code for August posted there, as well, for you! ;)
Please check out what Boutique Cafe has to say and let me know what you think!

The Destroyer is Exremely Hungry!

You would think, that after all those millions of goldfishy crackers "the destroyer" caught in my last post, that he would not be so hungry!
Well, like most guys, his appetite appears to be never-ending.

The other morning, the baby woke up and immediately found his Value-Sized bag of Cheerio type cereal. Holding it upside down, he tried to do his famous "shake and dump" trick. The bag was closed though, foiling his efforts!
I asked his sweet sister to help him get some of the O's out of the bag for him to munch. What ensued was a Battle To The Death!
Are you familiar with Hermit crabs? Did you know they would rather be torn apart and killed, rather than let go of whatever it is they are holding onto?

We happen to have several hermit crabs, and this was exactly like that!

The destroyer was gripping the cereal bag with both hands curled into claws and belting out his favorite "war cry" that I have mentioned before.

------Ear splitting horror------
On the other end of the bag, was the ever-helpful sister, just trying to do what she was told to help a brother out! It was pretty hilarious to see-
Until he went for the Jugular. That is when it turned N A S T Y

Mommy was forced to intervene. The destroyer was still extremely reluctant to undo his grip in order to receive his treat. Can you say STUBBORN?

Content with his snack, all was right with the world again. For about 30 minutes!
The baby obviously did not get enough, so he decided to travel to the kitchen and see what there was to be had. Do you recall me telling you that although my baby is nearly 15 months old, he is very compact- still sporting 3-6 month clothing and shoes?

Well, what he is missing in size, he makes up in determination! He found some bags of groceries from the late night trek before, sitting in the kitchen. He managed to find the grocery bag that held "the prize". One grocery bag holding not only one LARGE bag of cereal, but two large bags of cereal!
He actually picked the overflowing grocery bag up and carried it for about two feet! These cereal bags are nearly as tall as he is and he was toting TWO of them! I got the hint that he really wanted to test the new cereals out, so I opened one of the bags and handed him two mini-wheats. Happiness once again, momentarily spread throughout the land.

Satisfied? Nope, still hungry. Ten minutes later, the baby just could not resist knowing what the other cereal bag had in store, so he went back into the kitchen and picked up the other new Value sized bag of cereal and carried it towards mommy- all the while trying to see over the bag so he wouldnt fall down! ;)
I was NOT about to open another bag of cereal, so that one got confiscated.
Anyone want to feed a hungry baby??

Goldfish Crackers anyone?

"The Destroyer" has Struck Again!

Yesterday I bought a brand new box of stouffer's brand of fishy crackers or "goldfish" style.

This afternoon the baby was being fussy so I asked his sister to get the box out of the pantry and give him a few.
I am guessing that the baby did not think that the 3 crackers he received was nearly enough!

Next thing I know, there he is, swimming in a pool of goldfish, and having a marvelous time!

He was even scooping them up with his hands and tossing them into the air, as if he were literally in a pool of water. Weee!

However, the destroyer's conscience got the better of him and decided he better start helping mommy pick up all those fishies before someone steps on them.

After all, he can't possibly let all that
yummy stuff go to waste!

He's a growing boy, for cryin' out loud!

Luckily, I managed to catch a bit of him on video
trying to put the crackers back in the box.

You can't see the part where "the destroyer" reveals the true reason he is "helping mommy" put the crackers away... that he is only putting the crackers back in, so he can dump them again!

Once again, I must mention: Neither of my GIRLS ever did this...
Here is a peek of him "helping", sorry, don't know why it's sideways!

video

Tired of it yet? Nope not me!

So, we have posted about three movie tickets you can get absolutely free! You may be tired of all the ways I have been listing to get free movie tickets, but I'm not! with a family of 5, it is not that often we get to go to the movies, so free is definitely good.
I am up to 5 free tickets in less than a month's time, what about you?

Here is another way if you havent already heard. I got two more free movie tickets for purchasing 4 trial size cans of AXE body spray at Walgreens. I have been seeing lots of buzz about this online over the past couple of weeks and had to try it out! The August 10th Walgreens circular will have it advertised, but some lucky customers have been getting the tickets since July. So for less than $4 I got two free movie tickets worth a maximum of $12 each!
You can get full size body spray or body wash but this does work with the trial size! Amazing.. emoviecash.com is redeeming the ticket codes but only through September 15th. Then, you have until November 30 to use them. At least that is what my catalina coupon says.
(catalina is the automatic coupons that print on A seperate machine at the register during the transaction)

Check the closeout section for axe products or just get the trial sizes. Also go to the emovie cash website to check who is participating in your zipcode. Some people only have discount theatres participating in their area, so they dont get to use the coupon to see new releases.
I didnt think I would have any in my area, but there is a whole list of theaters for Boise and surrounding areas!
If you happen to ONLY want one movie ticket instead of two, you can purchase 3 axe products, LOL. Also, the coupon will say a free movie ticket, when you buy 4 items, but when you redeem it, it will tell you it is actually for two movie tickets.

Zombies DO exist

Here I am posting this while the baby is sleepin in my lap! I just got done loading the dishes into the dishwasher and have yet to wash the baby bottles. The dishes have been sitting for a couple days..yuck! Not my fault. It's my hubby's, yup, seriously, I am not passing the buck :)

<--This is what my baby looks like most nights, when I am working on the blog! Believe it or not, he would rather be there, than on a soft cushy spot. Heard of attachment parenting? Well, he is into it, whether I like it or not :)

Anyways, my hubby volunteered for the chore of dishes years ago, which is why usually he is always the one that does the dishes -and my teenage daughter's chore is to unload it. He usually washes the baby bottles too. But today, i was FORCED to do the dishes. Well, basically, there were no more forks left and no bottles either, but luckily the baby is asleep at the moment, so what he doesn't know won't hurt him.
So why didn't my hubby do the dishes? He turned into a zombie

-true story. If you don't think zombies really exist, just try staying up for a few days straight and your opinion will change!
Yah, so he started a new schedule Monday Morning starting at 6:30 am, then worked a graveyard shift that night at his night job. Tuesday morning he got off work and went back to work on his new morning shift. He then worked a graveyard last night afterwards, came home this morning, and yep- he is back at work again. Zombie.

I know some of you are thinkin' "LUCKY!" you hardly ever have to do the dishes!" Well, you are right, I am pretty lucky, compared to some, but I would gladly trade doing the dishes every day for all of MY chores! LOL So, next time you see my hard-workin' hubby, just ask to see his soft dishwater hands :)
Anyone want to come over and wash the baby's bottles? I will give you a fudgesicle...

I have a question for all of you!
Does your hubby pitch in with the chores, and if so, which ones??

Free Activity suggestions for kids age 2-6

Hey, I have a new widget on my blog! It is sponsored by Leapfrog. I don't know about you but we have alot of Leapfrog stuff at our house.

This kid-geared poll is for Parents with children around the ages of 2-6 years old. Experts in early childhood education, created this tool for parents to help them figure out where their child is developmentally. Based on the results of your "quiz" survey, it then recommends books, toys and also FREE activities for your child that will be developmentally appropriate!

Savvy Source says that in the process of using this tool, parents can become better at understanding what the different stages of growth are for their child, whether they are a toddler or going into preschool.

This is a pioneer program sponsored by Leapfrog, check it out right here on our blog!

mommy's musings

It was bound to happen. I had to use the bathroom and the baby was fast asleep in his moby style baby wrap carrier. It has happened before but I just waited until he woke up. This day, I waited and couldn't wait no more! Please tell me this has happened to you, or am I the only one? LOL. Luckily the sound of the waterfall did not wake him...

The "destroyer" has learned where all the FUN stuff is hidden under the kitchen sink- I NEEED Mr.YUK stickers! Does any other mommas remember these from childhood?? I used to get them from school all the time, but I haven't seen one since...howcome my kids have never gotten any of those? :(

I just looked it up online and I guess it is because since the creation of Mr. Yuk back in 1971 they are used mostly in PA and WA. I went to grade school in Washington State so I guess that explains that!

It seemed that according to some people, kids were drinking poison because of the "Skull And Crossbones" labels. Apparently, some kids were thinking that it was "Pirate Food". In order to prevent this, they invented "Mr. Yuk".

"Mr. Yuck is mean,
Mr. Yuck is green!"

I was thrilled to find out I can get some for my kids to enjoy and stick all over our yucky products like cleaners, etc. Ah, to be young again! There's nothin' like a sticker.
If you want some, here is the info:
To request a free sheet of Mr. Yuk stickers, please send a self-addressed stamped business size envelope to:

Mr. Yuk
Pittsburgh Poison Center
Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC
3705 Fifth Avenue
Pittsburgh, PA 15213-2583

Of course, its been...a while since I was in grade school, so it was not totally surprising to find out that there is now crayons, pencils, wristbands and even t-shirts with Mr. Yuk! Woo-hoo!!

He has also moved on to become quite a world traveler:
"Americans have introduced him to children in Europe, Asia and Iceland. Corporations have placed his face on the product labels of hazardous materials, and publishing companies have used the symbol in textbooks and standardized tests to represent poisons. Mr. Yuk was the first and continues to be the most commonly used poison education symbol in the nation."

Well, I stepped in a pile of gooey stuff on the floor today and it was the clorox color safe bleach that got tipped over during "the destroyer's" poison quest.

He also has discovered which drawer we keep all the medicine in and thinks the bottles are maracas! He is quite the dancer and loves to shake his hips whenever there is music, so it is not surprising that he uses medicine bottles as instruments LOL.

On a related note, he was actually trying to sing along to a song on tv tonight! It was the song on "Peep and the big wide world" if you know what that is. You can hear the theme song here. He loves that and always dances but he has never acted as if he was singing along! I don't remember either of my girls trying to sing at 14 months? Does your baby do that? I am curious...
